Defining/Describing Tapping/EFT:

One way of describing Tapping/EFT as suggested by its founder Gary Craig is "Psychological Acupuncture". By tapping with your fingers instead of using needles, on specific acupoints, you stimulate the body's energy system or Chi (Our Life Force Energy), bringing the body into balance and calming the amygdala. This is important, because of the mind/body connection.

We know today that the emotional and physical body cannot be separated. Most physical illness has an emotional component.  Tapping/EFT's flexibility allows you to work with the physical issue to clear the emotional issue or work with the emotional issue to clear the physical issue.

What occurs in the body and how Tapping/EFT helps:

When experiencing constant stress or anxiety, the fight, flight or freeze response in the brain is activated producing  excessive amounts of cortisol and adrenaline, creating an unbalanced state in the body.  Tapping/EFT goes directly to the amygdala, where your fight, flight, freeze response is located and calms this response, Studies have shown that Tapping/EFT actually changes your brain chemistry and works to rewire your neuropathways, so you actually begin to see the world differently!

When the energy system is in BALANCE and the amygdala is not reactive, you move into an emotional state of peace and calm and in this balanced state the body is better able to heal itself.

EFT Training

From the Clinical Perspective:

Tapping/EFT is an Energy Psychology Technique like EMDR.  Research has shown Tapping/EFT to be as effective as EMDR and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in treating PTSD, Anxiety Disorders and Depression. An added benefit of Tapping/EFT is your clients can learn this tool and use it at home, between sessions, and after treatment is over! I believe that Tapping/EFT can also help with secondary trauma because YOU the healing professional tap on yourself along with the client, so YOU receive the same benefits as your client during the session in balancing both of your energy systems.

How is Tapping/EFT Beneficial?

  • Tapping/EFT is known to work much faster on issues than traditional psychotherapy.

  • It is very gentle and easy to learn.

  • You can teach your clients how to use it, and empower them to more fully participate in their healing process.

  • Tapping/EFT enhances the effectiveness of psychotherapy and uncovers core issues whereby, reducing and many times eliminating the emotional reactivity that is attached.

  • When used properly it is effective in working with children and adults who have been victims of trauma.

  • Tapping/EFT is a SELF HELP TOOL that anyone can learn.  It is advised when working with trauma or serious mental health issues to work with someone trained in the field.

  • Tapping/EFT can be used in treating stress, anxiety and depression.
